Not every lesson that we are invited to learn feels good; however, nary a one of them is superfluous to our journey.
That painful experiences in life are as important to our growth as the easy experiences isnât what we want to hear. But we have all heard the saying, âNo pain, no gain,â and unfortunately, it has a ring of truth to it. Does an experience have to be painful to teach us something? Of course not. But we canât just run from one that is distressing, hoping it will become something else. If an unpleasant happening has paid a visit, we needed the experience to prepare us for the next stage of who we are becoming.
Our lives are not static, thank goodness. There are those days when we want to pull the blankets over our heads and say, âNot now,â but the option to close the world out isnât one we can fully espouse, not if we want to become the people we were born to be. We do all have a specific task in this life, and no two of us have been created for the same one. If we can embrace the power of this idea even for a moment, we will get a sense of how awesome our journey really is.
Whatever gets our attention today has come on cue. We may not like the experience, but letâs try to remember we need it for the journey we have been called to make.

Hope arouses, as nothing else can arouse, a passion for the possible.
âWilliam Sloane Coffin Jr.
Walking into my first 12-step meeting changed my life in a profound way. It was in 1974, and it was an Al-Anon meeting. I experienced hope for a changed life within moments of being there that night. The change I felt was immediate and intense; I had felt bereft of hope prior to that fateful night. I left the meeting knowing that I could survive, that I could eventually do what all of these other individuals were doing. Did I know how? Not at all; but the feeling I left with was palpable. I knew I had to go back.
The experience of hope, regardless of the circumstance that inspires it, changes us profoundly. It energizes our minds and our movements. It is the seed for change of any kind, and once the seed is planted, it begins to germinate. What comes next depends of course on the individual and the circumstance, but change will transpire. And growth, or peace of mind, or both, are guaranteed. Hope is truly the first step to the manifestation of whatever we deeply desire.
Hope is an elixir. It creates a different mood, and we are changed, perhaps forever. Letâs seek to recognize the hopeful circumstances in our lives today.

Some things we think are bad may be good.
âHarry Bartholomew
Itâs never wise to assume we understand the full impact of a circumstance until we see what it has wrought. How many times have we
